Levi van Leeuwen, a butcher and Mina de Vries married and had three daughters, Rosetta, Henrietta and Marie. The two parents and oldest daughter (Rosetta) were deported together and murdered in Sobibor on the same day in April 1943.
Middle daughter Henriette and her husband Isak Abraham van Spier (1910-1943) were both murdered at Sobibor in July. A stolperstein for him is at Nieuwstraat 42, Culemborg, Gelderland, along with his brother Abraham van Spier (1912-1944) and their parents, Manuel van Spier (1880-1943) and Henrietta van Spier-Beem (1881-1943). The van Spier parents were murdered in Sobibor on that same April day as Levi, Mina and Rosetta van Leeuwen.
Out of a total of nearly 34,000 Jews deported from the Netherlands to Sobibor during the spring of 1943, only 19 survived the war.
The youngest van Leeuwen daughter, Marie, born in 1910, lived in Arnhem with her husband, Max Izaak Levie, a baker. Both were murdered in Auschwitz – she in December 1942 and he 3 months later.
"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
Borne was the first town in the Netherlands in which Stolpersteine were placed -- on 29 November 2007.
