General MacArthur Memorial Corregidor

To mark the evacuation of General Douglas MacArthur from Corregidor and the Philippines (he said: "I shall return"), a statue has been erected in a small park at South Beach, on Corregidor, near the ferry wharf where day trips arrive from Manila.

From the small dock, MacArthur boarded one of four PT boats sent to rescue him from the battles around Manila (mostly on Bataan).

Author John J. Domagalski tells the dramatic story of the rescue in: Under a Blood Red Sun: The Remarkable Story of PT Boats in the Philippines and the Rescue of General MacArthur.

About a kilometer down the waterfront is the headquarters, burrowed into a huge hillside cave in what is called the Malinta Tunnel, in which MacArthur had his command post during the last American days on Corregidor.

Often, but not always, the Tunnel is open for visitors to the island.
