Memorials Carleton & York Regiment

The village of Posterenk was liberated on the 13th of April 1945 by The Carleton and York Regiment under command of leuitenant Richard Booth Savage, who was killed during this liberation together with 5 other Canadians.

At first they were buried near the Wilpermolen mill, however they were transported later to be reburied at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery. In the Wilpermolen there is also another plaque with the emblem of the regiment.

During the annual liberation festivities in 2015 a memorial picture was presented with the names of the 6 Canadians. Mayor Penninx (municipality Voorst), the Royal Canadian Mountain Police band and the Colour Party of the Royal Canadian Legion Branche 005 were in attendance of this presentation.

The Canadian soldiers are:
Private Frank Gallant, 13-4-1945
Private James Frank Mossey, 14-4-1945
Private Samuel Glazier Porter, 15-4-1945
Sergeant Harold Gorden Sabean, 15-4-1945
Lieutenant Richard Booth Savage, 13-4-1945
Lance Corporal Frederick Joseph Tait, 15-4-1945

On Sunday, September 27, 2020, a special plaque was unveiled with the names of the fallen soldiers of the Carleton and York regiment of the 1st Canadian Army. In the presence of many residents of Posterenk, Mayor Penninx of the municipality of Voorst, the Royal Canadian Legion, City of Apeldoorn Pipes and Drums, the plaque was placed on the Wilpermolen. Very special was that a nephew of Lt. Richard Savage, Mr. Hodgson and a delegation from the Royal Canadian Mountain Police band were present at the ceremony via a live video link from Canada.
The plaque was placed next to the existing plaque in the Wilpermolen and was an initiative of 2 residents of Posterenk, who wanted to pay tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom. In addition to the unveiling of the plaque, a booklet about the liberation of Posterenk was also presented.
