Before the war, Berend is a councilor for the CPN. When the war breaks out, Berend takes charge of the illegality in the Nieuweschans area. There he distributes copies of the communist magazine Het Noorderlicht and is committed to De Rode Hulp. De Rode Hulp takes refugee communists from Nazi Germany and gives them shelter, food and money.
