Stumbling Stone Anna Pauwlonastraat 7

This small brass memorial plaque (Stolperstein or stumbling stone) commemorates:

* Lea Rosenbaum, born 1878, deported 1943 from Westerbork, murdered 20 March1943 Sobibor.

Lea Rosenbaum was born on 24 September 1978 in Peize, Netherlands. Her parents died before the war. No information was found on her life before or during the war other than that she lived at this address. Joods Monument gives her occupation as huisvrouw / housewife, but there is no sign she was married.

At the beginning of the war, Lea had 3 siblings. None survived. The two who lived in Groningen were killed in Sobibor on 26 March 1943 along with their spouses. Her sister Rosa and her husband, who lived in Haren, were killed in Auschwitz in 1942. Lea Rosenbaum was 64 when she was murdered in Sobibor.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth, and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
