Stumbling Stone Borgweg 98

Lived here:

Hermanus Kleefman
Born July 23, 1894 in Slochteren
Arrested May 3, 1943
Murdered May 4, 1943 in Woudbloem

On May 3 in the morning, Hermanus Kleefman from Scharmer visits his brother Eisso in Woudbloem. Normally, the brothers should be at work at the potato flour factory in the village, but hardly anyone shows up that morning because of the strikes. Because it makes little sense to hang around the factory, they first go for a coffee at Eisso. At that moment the German Ordnungspolizei arrives and arrests the two brothers. A little later, 26-year-old Egbert Thoma from Woudbloem is also arrested.

The next morning at 10:00 the three men in the Scholtenhuis are sentenced to death. At the site of the potato flour factory, against the Vezeldijk, three crosses are placed on the ground. The Kleefman and Thoma brothers should step on it. They are summarily executed at 4:05 PM.

Hermanus, 48, leaves behind a wife (Antje Scholtens) and three children. Hermanus is buried in an unknown place and is still missing.
