He was the only Melton Mowbray person to be awarded the Victoria Cross in World War II at the age of 20 when he was company runner in the Battalion of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment in Italy in October 1944
James Edgar 'Johnnie' Johnson
AIR VICE-MARSHAL
This plaque commemorates the life of 'Johnnie' Johnson CB, CBE, DSO and two Bars, DFC and Bar, DL, who grew up in the Borough of Melton Mowbray.
He was the top-scoring RAF fighter pilot of the second World War and was accredited with the shooting down of 38 enemy aircraft in more than 700 missions
