Radio station Kootwijk was the most important connection between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies during the Interbellum. The station was captured by the Wehrmacht on 11 May 1940. The German occupator used radio station Kootwijk:
- to stay in contact with the U-boats in the Atlantic sea.
- for propaganda broadcasts towards Great Brittain and the neurtral states.
- to jammer broadcasts transmitted by Radio Oranja and BBC.
On 6 and 7 April 1945, the Germans blew up the radio masts of radio station Kootwijk and destroyed all of the broadcast equipment.

The building is currently used for cultural aims. The area can be visited since 2005.
