Levie (Louis) de Leeuw, a baker and Louise Bos were married in 1929. In 1930, he started his own bakery at Nieuwstraat 74. They had two children – Jetje and Jacob. Samuel de Vries came from Oss and worked in the de Leeuw bakery.
In 1942, Samuel was deported. He worked and was killed in the Schöppinitz forced labor camp in Poland. (Another stolperstein for Samuel is with his family at Floraliastraat 49 in Oss.)
The de Leeuw family was taken from Deventer and on 17 November 1943 they arrived in Westerbork. Louise and their 2 sons were deported to Auschwitz on 8 February 1944 and were all three killed there 3 days later. Louis was quarantined until 10 March and then was used as a forced laborer. He was killed in one of the camps in Silesia.
"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth, and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
Borne was the first town in the Netherlands in which Stolpersteine were placed -- on 29 November 2007.
