The monument consists of a concrete column with a female figure on top. The female figure stretches out her arm longingly towards the sea, from where the liberators came. The right hand is raised to welcome them.
There are two plaques in the street in front of the monument with the following text on the first plaque:
Freedom
regained
May 5, 1945
The second plaque was added later, in memory of fallen East Indies visitors.
The monument was designed by the sculptor Hubert van Lith. The monument was unveiled on May 1, 1961, but then stood on the Burgemeester Woutersplein. It was later moved to its current location.
