Memorial Short Stirling 6091

This memorial is dedicated to the Short Stirling bomber, no. 6091 of the 7th Squadron R.A.F. Bomber Command, which crashed together with 6 of tis crew members during the night of 7 to 8 October 1941 near Spijkenisse. The 7th crew member was taken prison of war. The R.A.F. lost 37 of its airplanes during this operation.

The Stirling propeller, which can be found on top of the pedestal, was found in May 1976 by a couple of children in a ditch.

The text on the fron-side of the pedestal reads:
"ROYAL AIR FORCE
8 - 11 - 1941".

The text on both sides of the pedestral reads:
"VERWRONGEN MAAR NIET VERSLAGEN".

This could be translated as:
"DISTORTED BUT NOT DEFEATED".
