Church of Kuusamo

In September 1944, heavy fighting took place in this region. The 6th Gebirgs Division Nord, pursued by the Russians, briefly passed through Kuusamo. During this visit, Untersturmfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich (not to be confused with the high ranking Nazi) ordered to take down the church bells and burry them lest they fall into Russian hands. In 1959, former SS engineers returned to this village to help unearth the missing church bells. Today these same bells reside in the re-built church.
