ERECTED BY MEMBERS OF THE
CANTERBURY AND DISTRICT BRANCH
BURMA STAR ASSOCIATION IN
MEMORY OF COMRADES WHO
FELL DURING THE BURMA CAMPAIGN
1941 – 1945
THE SECOND WORLD WAR BATTLES OF KOHIMA AND IMPHAL IN THE
BURMA CAMPAIGN WERE VICTORIES AS DECISIVE AS ALAMEIN IN THE
WESTERN DESERT.
THESE TWO TOWNS IN NORTH-EAST INDIA WERE BESEIGED BY THE
JAPANESE FROM APRIL TO JUNE 1944.
IN BITTER FIGHTING, THE BRITISH 14TH ARMY HELD BOTH TOWNS,
RECEIVING THEIR SUPPLIES BY AIR. IT WAS THE FIRST MAJOR DEFEAT
OF THE JAPANESE ARMY IN THE FIELD.
THEY RETREATED BACK THOUGH BURMA. BY MAY 1945 THE ALLIES
HAD RECAPTURED RANGOON.
THREE YEARS OF OCCUPATION WERE OVER.
THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THE CANTERBURY AND DISTRICT
BRANCH OF THE BURMA STAR ASSOCIATION.
