Simon Bolivar Buckner jr. Memorial

This memorial is dedicated to the memory of American General Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr. who was the commander of the 10th U.S. Army during the Battle of Okinawa (1.4.1945 - 23.6.1945).

He was instantly killed at this very spot by a Japanese 47mm artillery shell on 18 June 1945, making him one of the highest-ranking American officers to have been killed by enemy fire during the Second World War.

General Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr. is buried at Frankfort Cemetery, Frankfort, Kentucky.
