Fort Mears

Fort Mears was built between July 1940 and September 1941 to defend the Dutch Harbor Naval Operating Base against enemy attacks. Dutch Harbor was attacked twice between 3 and 4 June 1941 by Japanese fighter planes and dive bombers.

The fort today:
It is possible to visit Fort Mears between 9.00 AM and 10.00 PM. There is nothing of note that remains of Fort Mears. The location of the base is now a hotel, shopping area, commercial buildings, a post office, and an open area where fishermen store their crab pots and stretch out their nets to do repairs. There are a few small World War II observation concrete bunkers and some ruined concrete foundations of a few buildings. But a visitor might never know there was a large army base there.
