Commonwealth War Cemetery Ambon

In Galala, Tantuin on Ambon there was a large Japanese camp for Allied POW’s, from 1942 until 1945. Ambon War Cemetery is located on the place of the POW-camp. Most casualties on the cemetery died in this camp.

Nowadays there are more than 1,956 Commonwealth graves on the cemetery. Of these, more than 1000 were Australian, more than 800 were British. Of the Commonwealth graves, 357 are unidentified. There are also 185 Dutch war graves, 15 being unidentified and one American airman: USAAF Corporal John R. Waite. He was a member of the crew of B-24L-10-CO Liberator Serial Number A72-92, which crashed on 27 July 1945.
