Prisoner of War Camp 12 was a large POW camp on Australian soil during the Second World War.
By August 1944, there were 2,223 Japanese, 14,720 Italian and 1,585 German prisoners in this camp. The camp was scene of a massive Japanse riot and breakout on 5 August 1944.
During the outbreak, 4 Australian guards and 231 Japanese prisoners were killed and 108 prisoners were wounded.
The camp was closed in 1947.
