Stumbling Stone Schmiedelstraße 7

This stumbling stone (Stolperstein) commemorates:
* Rosa Stern née Mayer, born 1885, deported 1942, Krasniczyn, ???

Rosa Mayer was born in Kitzingen. She married Max Stern, for whom little information was seen. During unknown time periods, he lived in Kitzingen, was in Izbica and was murdered during the Shoah. Different sources show Rosa living in Kitzingen, in Belgium (1937 or 1939), in France and in Würzburg. Records show she was deported from Würzburg on 25 April 1942 on Train Da 49, a special passenger train (Sonderzug) that took her and >900 others to Krasnystaw, Poland, arriving 3 days later as part of Aktion Rheinhard. Krasniczyn village ghetto was about 16 km from Krasnystaw. One source shows her as being deported further to Izbica, a transit camp for Belzec extermination camp. Her fate is unknown; she was officially declared dead.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
