This memorial commemorates the residents of Wilmington who were killed or missing in the Vietnam War.
The memorial was dedicated on November 11, 1983. The memorial depicts a black man carrying his dead white body in the field after a battle. At the time of the dedication of this memorial there were not many memorials to the Vietnam War.
Delaware artist, Charles Park designed this memorial and in the late 1980s a group, funded by the Smithsonian Museum, designated this Delaware Vietnam Veterans Memorial as the most meaningful that existed at the time.
The memorial was built on land that the city of Wilmington DE donated in Brandywine Park.
New Castle County helped with the funding and planning of the memorial.
This November 11,2023 will be the 40th anniversary of the memorial and we are hoping for a 40th year celebration.
