This memorial on the Gammarth French War Cemetery commemorates the 53 killed crewmembers of the French submarine Morse, who on 17 June 1940 ran on a mine in the Gulf of Gabes. The wreck of the submarine lies now at a depth of 27 meters.
Some unidentified crewmembers washed ashore and were buried in the cemetery of Sfax. They now lie buried under this memorial.
