This memorial commemorates the sea battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914.
"In commeration of the battle of the Falkland islands fought on the 8th day of december 1914 in which the british squadron, Invincible, Inflexible, Carnarvon, Kent, Cornwall, Glasgow, Bristol, Canopus & Macedonia under the command of vice-admiral sir F.C. Doveton Sturdee, destroyed the German squadron under vice admiral Graf von Spee thereby saving this colony from capture by the enemy."
Over 2000 Germans lost their lives or were captured when the cruisers sSharnhorst, Gneisenau, Nurberg and Leipsig were sunk, with only Dresden escaping for only 29 British casualties.
The figure of victory faces east, looking out to sea towards the site of the battle. She holds a palm branch in one hand and an orb in the other. Unveiled in 1927, it is believed to be the world’s most Southernley memorial to the great war.
