On 17 October 1961 there was a demonstration of tens of thousands of Algerians against the Algerian war and for independence. There was intense police violence against the demonstrators, killing at least 200 people. They were shot, beaten to death or thrown into the Seine where they drowned.
This day has since become known as the Bloodbath of Paris or the Paris Massacre. In France, the government and media remained silent for many years about this, but the last years, recognition takes place.
