Memorial Stone Bernulfusstraat 3

One Memorial Stone was placed here on 28-09-2016 for:
* NICOLAAS HERMANUS BERGSTEIJN (executed 08-03-1945, Woeste Hoeve, aged 25)

Nicolaas Hermanus Bergsteijn was born on 4 October 1919 in Naarden. He worked as a municipal official in the secretariat in Woudenberg. Nico came into contact with resistance fighter Theo Dobbe and was accepted into his group. Nico went into hiding with 200 blank identity cards and worked for the resistance group making false identity cards. The longer the war lasted, the greater the need for these identity cards. In mid-1944, Nico went into hiding in Daarle and then in Vroomshoop. Here he was arrested by the SD on 10 February 1945 for, among other things, raids on distribution offices. He was shot in the leg during an escape attempt. He was imprisoned by the SD in Almelo. On 8 March 1945, he was executed by firing squad near the Woeste Hoeve, in the municipality of Apeldoorn, as retaliation for the attack on Rauter, the head of the SS in the Netherlands.

This memorial stone commemorates a resistance fighter who was arrested, deported and/or murdered in the Second World War.

These memorial stones are located here for victims of National Socialism (Nazism). They are often placed as an alternative to the official Stolpersteine of the Gunter Demnig project. Where there is no Stolperstein but people still want to commemorate, a slightly different memorial stone or plague is used. The memorials are in most cases laid in front of the last known home address of the victims.
