Stumbling Stones Bottemaheerd 76

These small brass memorial plaques (Stolpersteine or stumbling stones), placed At the former address Beijumerweg 3 ,lcommemorate:

* Lucas Dijkstra, born 1899, murdered 15.4.1945, Noorderhoogebrug.
* Kornelis Dijkstra, born 1910, murdered 15.4.1945 Noorderhoogebrug.

Two brothers -- Lucas and Kornelis Dijkstra -- lived here, formerly Beijumerweg 3. In mid-April 1945 the Canadians were already in the city and shelled the German machine gun nests that had been set up to cover the escape route of the Germans towards Delfzijl. Unfortunately, one of the Canadian missiles landed just in front of the brothers' house here. They did not survive.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth, and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
