On 8 January 1942, the Japanese forced invaded Singapore. After some days of heavy fights they captured Singapore and started a POW-camp at Kranji.
Afther the Second World War, the cemetery of the camp was used as war cemetery and graves from other locations were brought to here.
Kranji War Cemetery contains 4,461 graves from the Second World War. Of these, more than 850 are unidentified. There are also 64 graves from the First World War.
This cemetery also contains the graves of 1422 war veterans and other military personnel.
Kranji War Cemetery contains 20 Dutch war graves, located near the Memorial of the Missing. They were prisoners-of-war who died in camps and were formerly buried in Saigon.
Johannes Jozephus Timmermans died of wounds in Singapore during the Korea War.
