Commonwealth Memorial of the Missing Singapore

This memorial is located at Kranji War Cemetery. Written on the memorial are 24,315 names, of killed Commonwealth soldiers who have no known grave.

The soldiers commemorated by the memorial died during the campaigns in Malaya and Indonesia or in subsequent captivity, many of them during the construction of the Burma-railway, or at sea while being transported into imprisonment elsewhere. The memorial also commemorates airmen who died during operations in this area and the surrounding oceans.

" 1939-1945
On the walls of this memorial are recorded
the names of the twentyfour thousand soldiers and airmen
of many races united in service to the British Crown
who gave their lives in Malaya and neighbouring lands and seas
and in the air over southern and eastern Asia and the Pacific
but to whom the fortune of war
denied the customary rites
accorded to their comrades in death.

DIED FOR ALL FREE MEN"
