Stumbling Stones Via Arenula 41

These memorial stones (Stolpersteine or stumbling blocks) commemorate:

* Amelia Piperno in Sonnino, born 1881, arrested 16 Oct 1943, deported to Auschwitz, murdered 23 Oct 1943.
* Mose Marco Sonnino, born 1870, arrested 16 Oct 1943, deported to Auschwitz, murdered 23 Oct 1943.

Mose Marco Sonnino and Amelia Sonnino were husband and wife. They were arrested in the October 1943 Nazi raid to remove all Jews from Rome. Their son Samuele, was arrested and deported on the same day, but he lived 3 months longer. His stolperstein is on Via Catalana 3, Rome.

* Angelo Piperno, born 1881, arrested 16 Oct 1943, deported to Auschwitz, murdered 23 Oct 1943.
* Giorgina Guglielma Cohen, born 1886, arrested 16 Oct 1943, deported to Auschwitz, murdered 23 Oct 1943.

Giorgina Cohen and Angelo Piperno were husband and wife.

* Angelo Romanelli, born 1882, arrested 16 Oct 1943, deported to Auschwitz, murdered 23 Oct 1943.
* Margherita Sonnino, born 1884, arrested 16 Oct 1943, deported to Auschwitz, murdered 23 Oct 1943.
* Laura Romanelli, born 1921, arrested 16 Oct 1943, deported to Auschwitz, murdered 23 Oct 1943.

Laura was the 22-year-old daughter of Angelo Romanelli and Margherita Sonnino.

As was the case for so many others in Rome, these 7 people living on Via Arenula 41 were all arrested in the 16 October raid, all held at the Roma Collegio Militaire, all deported 2 days later and all killed on the day they arrived in Auschwitz, 23 October 1943.

The small brass plaques, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were persecuted or murdered by the Nazis, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
