Hachijojima was reinforced with a strong Japanese garrison who fortified it. The island was bombed 26 times, mostly by B-29 of Task Force 58, in 1945. The U.S. Army suffered heavy losses during those attacks. According to official sources, 5853 inhabitants were evacuated during the war.
This mount is 854.3 meters high and was nicknamed the 'Iron Mountain' due to its fortifications built by the Japanese garrison.
