This memorial, a ‘khachkar’ (cross stone), commemorates the victims of the genocide on the Armenian people in 1915.
It was an initiative of the Committee of Armenians of Belgium.
Architect Isabelle Jakhian made the plans. It was inaugurated in 1997 in the middle of Henri Michaux Square, opposite Tenbosch Park.
The monument consists of a red tuff stone stela placed on a blue stone base. It reads in both national languages:
"To the 1,500,000 Armenians, victims of the genocide carried out on the orders of the Ottoman leaders of 1915"
Entries in the Armenian language are engraved on the left.
The stela inherits traditional religious motifs from the Khachkar, including the cross and church, as well as secular motifs such as the sun and bunch of grapes.
