In the Second World War, Tenchong was occupied by the Japanese army. According to sources, 9168 Chinese Kuomintang soldiers of the 20th Army and 19 Allied soldiers died in the counter offensive to recapture Tengchong from the Japanese. The Japanese lost more than 6000 soldiers.
This cemetery was established in 1945. It contains 3346 Chinese and 4 Japanese war graves. The memorial hall and other war memorials on the site are dedicated to the Chinese losses. It's the oldest WW2-era war cemetery in China.
