This memorial commemorates the clergyman Diego Ventaja Milán, bishop of Almeria, born in 1880, who was murdered by the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War, on 31 August 1936. He is considered a martyr of the Spanish Civil War and was beatified in 2013 by the Pope.
From 1936 to 1939, 6832 members of the Catholic clergy were excecuted without trial, sometimed after they were tortured, by Republicans because of their faith and monasteries and churches were destroyed. It is referred to as Spain's Red Terror, in which also tens of thousands of other people were murdered.
