In addition to individual graves, this cemetery consists of several mass graves containing thousands of victims of the massacres by the Republicans in November and December 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, who were also killed here. The only reason the people were arrested and executed without trial is because they were clergymen, Catholics, businessmen, monarchists or soldiers.
Many of the soldiers murdered here had been captured after the takeover of the Mountain Barracks (El Cuartel de la Montaņa) by the Republicans in Madrid. The appearance of the cemetery is dominated by the enormous white cross that is placed on one of the mountains in the background.
