The tennis court and terraces of Kohima were the site of heavy fighting between the Japanese 31th Infantry Division and the Indian XXXIII Corps consisting of the 161st Indian Infantry Brigade and British 6th Infantry Brigade. The battle lasted from 8 April to 13 May 1944. The losses on both sides were high: 10.368 (4604 Commonwealth and 5764 Japanese).
The Kohima War Cemetery was established on the battlefield.
