This fountain, on the main square of his birthplace, commemorates Federico García Lorca, a famous poet and play-writer who was executed by the Nationalists on 21 October 1936. He is seen by many as the best Spanish poet ever.
He was executed in a mass execution in Alfacar, with many others (estimates range up to 4000 people) and buried in a mass grave. His body was never found.
