Memorial Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo

This memorial, on the Campus de Bizkaia de la UPV-EHU, commemorates Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo (1864-1936), a Basque writer and philosopher. He was a professor at Salamanca, but in 1914 he was, due to pro-Allied sympathies, deposed by the Primo de Rivera regime and exiled to the Canary Islands, from where he emigrated to Paris. After the resignation of Primo de Rivera in 1930 he returned to Spain and was restored to his functions.
At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 Unanumo expressed strong protests against the Madrid government because of the outbreak of anarchy and on 12 October 1936 he had a famous speech pronunciation "Overcoming is not convincing" as a protest against the terror, after which he was arrested by Franco's troops. He died on New Year's Eve 1936 while he was under house arrest.
