German Fire-control Tower Marine Peilstand

This German Fire Control Tower of the ‘Marine Peilstand (Sounding Tower) ’ type 4 was part of the Atlantic Wall on the island of Guernsey. Designed to support 5 naval batteries (one level per battery), but as only 3 batteries were built, the remaining floors were shared with the army. A Freya radar was installed on the roof.

In June 1940, the British Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans. It was decided not to defend the islands and civilians who wanted to were evacuated to England at all costs. In fact, the island of Alderney was evacuated entirely. Soon the Germans began building defences on the islands, for which thousands of forced labourers from occupied Europe were used.
