This 13th-century castle was heavily fought during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The hilly area around this castle was known to the Americans as Hacksaw Ridge. On the northern side of the area where the American frontal assault took place, they had to climb a steep cliff. In doing so, they met fierce resistance from the Japanese, who forced them to retreat down, leaving behind a large number of dead and wounded.
Desmond Doss earned a Medal of Honor for keeping the wounded safe on the north side of the castle.
