Göttingen's Alter Stadtfriedhof is a field of honour with German war graves from both world wars. Most of the soldiers lying here were killed in the Göttingen region in April 1945.
Among the post-war headstones is the curious headstone of Flugzeugführer Unteroffizier Willi (Wilhelm) Strube, killed on 25.01.1940. His headstone dates back to the Nazi era and bears the image of a Flugzeugführerabzeichen, with the swastika removed.
This cemetery also contains a number of monuments commemorating those killed in World War I and World War II, including a memorial to the German 50th Infantry Division. The relation of precisely this division to this cemetery is not clear.
