This memorial commemorates the actions of Sergeant Day G. Turner, 80th US Infantry Division, on 8 January 1945. Commanding a squad of nine, he led his men to defend their position for four hours, killing 11 Germans and taking 25 prisoners at the cost of one dead and five wounded. Turner was promoted to Staff Sergeant, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor after being killed in action in Germany on 8 February 1945.
