Dutch-German Defense Work Olmendijk

Series of small defences near Philippine in the province of Zeeland. They include one observation point, one machine-gun Tobruk (the easternmost one) with an ammunition dump, accessible by an overgrown trench. The works are constructed of concrete and moulded stones.

A little further west, in the body of that dyke, another defensive work is probably buried.

This location was originally a World War I Dutch border casemate. Like several Dutch casemates here, they were adapted for German artillery at Rommel's instigation in 1944 to defend Zeeland Flanders and slow the advance of the Allies (British, Scottish, Canadian and eastern Poles) in connection with the accessibility of Antwerp.
