Buried in this military cemetery are 210 Belgian soldiers and a member of the Gendarmerie who died in the first few days of World War I between Aug. 4 and Aug. 6, 1914, around the city of Liège.
The soldiers are from the 9th Line Regiment (122 soldiers), the 11th Line Regiment (1 soldier), the 12th Line Regiment (3 soldiers), the 14th Line Regiment (35 soldiers), the 1st (42 soldiers) and the 4th (1 soldier) regiments Chasseurs à pied, the 3rd Regiment Genie (6 soldiers), the Corps Gendarmerie (1 soldier).
These soldiers, as the monument indicates, all died on August 5, 1914. See also the monument at the chapel of Sart Tilman and the plaque at the farm.
In particular, the 9th and 14th line regiments were stationed in this part of the defense of the Liège stable. They suffered heavy losses in defending the hill near the Sart-Tilman district. They held their ground under heavy pressure, but at some point they were no longer able to withstand the overwhelming force of the German army on August 5, 1914.
This cemetery bears witness to that.
