Memorial Chasseurs Ardennais Arlon

The "Ardennes Jagers" were founded because of the need to defend the province of Luxembourg. It was rural and sparsely populated and was quite far from the center of the country.
The idea took its final shape under the impetus of General Hellebaut and the liberal Albert Devèze. For them it was a special force recruited on the spot with great firepower and very mobile.
The new unit - with specific uniforms similar to those of the French Alpine hunters - should also have a reinforced position on the eastern border.
The 10th line regiment, very active during the First World War and stationed in Arlon, was disbanded in 1933 and transformed into the 1st regiment of the Ardennes Jagers.
The name first surfaced on November 8, 1934.
Their typical uniform consisted of a green cap with wild boar insignia, resembling that of the French Alpine hunters at the top and that of the cavalry at the bottom.
The motto was unmistakable: «Résiste et mord», (resist and bite).
The new unit, with besides Arlon garrisons in Bastogne and Vielsalm, had to provide efficient defense on the border, as planned, relying on 375 small bunkers of the «Devèze line», in collaboration with the French army.
At the start of World War II and the mobilization of the Belgian army, a second division of the Ardennes Hunters was set up under the leadership of General François Ley.
The two divisions together formed the Ardeense Jagers corps.
