This Plaque, at the entrance to the Academy building of the Leiden University, commemorates the Leiden alumnus Herman Coster, who died on 21 October 1899 at the Battle of Elandslaagte.
Because many Boer were of Dutch origin, the Netherlands was pronounced pro-Boer and about 2,000 Dutch volunteers went to South Africa to fight on the side of the republics.
