During the Siege of Leningrad (1941-1944) there were heavy fighting for these heights. The Red Army lost about 360.000 soldiers and officers here.

The whole battlefield is a national monument. There are many memorial stones erected on the site to commemorate the dead. Ten thousands of Russians are buried here in countless mass graves and many ten thousands more are scattered over the area, of whom the locations of the graves are unknown.
