This 19th century fortification was one of the German strongholds during the battle of Königsberg. The garrison did not surrender on 9 april 1945, like the rest of the city and fighting for the Dohnaturm continued untill the next day. It is still not clear why the garrison refused to surrender.
A plaque on the fortress commemorates the capture of the Dohnaturm on 10 April 1945
