Festung Königsberg - Fort V "Friedrich Wilhelm III"

This 19th century fortification was part of the Königsberg fortress. During the battle of Königsberg, Fort V "Friedrich Wilhelm III" was defended by a 200 man German garrison, which capitulated on 8 April 1945 after 16 hours of heavy fighting. 15 Soviet soldiers were awarded with the titel: "Hero of the Soviet Union" for this action.

The fort today:
There is a permanent exposition of weaponry and a Russian memorial stone in front of "Friedrich Wilhelm III". Currently, access to the fort is open to visitors. Some rooms are closed with a grid for safety reasons. Inside there is artificial lighting, an exhibition of artifacts found inside the fort, reference materials. You can rent an audio guide in Russian, English and German.
