This castle was held until 28 March 1945 as one of the last German strongholds in East Prussia. Thanks to the fierce German resistance, ten thousands of refugees succesfully managed to reach safe ground. The last German defenders retreated on 29 March 1945 by using sturmboats.

Near the castle ruins are a number of war graves of Russian soldiers who fell during the fighting for this castle.
