Alexander H. Stephens resided in this house (Liberty Hall) from 1839 until his death in 1883. He was a prominent Georgia political figure who was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1843–53), Vice President of the Confederate States of America (1861-65) and after the end of the War, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives again (1873–82) and governor of Georgia (1882-1883).
