This memorial commemorates the soldiers who fell while serving with the 1st Infantry Division in the First and Second World War and the wars and conflicts thereafter.
In the Second World War, the division was among others active in North-Africa, Sicily, at Omaha Beach and in the Huertgen Forest. In total, the division counted 4,280 dead and 15,208 wounded.
