This 240 meters high ridge was the site of heavy fighting in the Siege of Sevastopol (1941-1942) and the battle for the liberation of Sevastopol in 1944. It took the Wehrmachts 2 weeks to fully conquer the ridge in 1942. Sapun was recaptured by the Red Army on 7 May 1944. The first memorials were placed here in late 1944.
